A total of 75 Nexa supervisors from the Cerro Lindo Mining Unit and the Pasco Mining Complex participated in the course “Risk Management for Supervisors GMIRM – N2,” led by specialist Rocío Núñez and coordinated by Alexander Dabner, the leader of the Comprehensive Safety and Health area at SMI-ICE-Chile.

The course included expert advice from the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre at the University of Queensland.

Gladys Nancy Ruiz, Nexa’s Safety, Occupational Health and Environment Manager, commented that the company’s safety culture manages risk by applying the GMIRM (Global Minerals Industry Risk Management) model: “Under this premise, the course aims to improve the supervisors’ understanding and practice of risk management, allowing for safer decision-making in each process.”

According to ICMM, the main factors contributing to mining accidents include inadequate identification of risks and ineffective application of controls. Therefore, the course sought to prevent or minimize accidents by fortifying efficient risk management.

Carmen Huarancca Ossa, Head of Environment at the Pasco Complex, said that the course provided her with useful knowledge about risk prioritization and critical controls.

Luis Steward Damián Munguía, an electrical maintenance supervisor also from the Pasco Complex, mentioned the usefulness of the Bowtie methodology in risk management: “This methodology has helped immensely in identifying and managing preventive controls.”

Carlos Zaldívar Garay, emergency coordinator at Cerro Lindo, remarked, “The training session provided us with key tools to manage emergencies and, above all, to prevent them more effectively.”
