Within the framework of the Coquimbo Region’s Water Transformation Program, an interesting international seminar was held last week to analyze water productivity between Chile and Australia.

The University of Queensland’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining and our Social Performance team conducted a training session on community relations in the exploration stage, which was attended by more than 30 professionals from different operations that this Canadian mining company maintains in Chile, Brazil and Argentina.

The general manager of SMI-ICE-Chile and researcher in the Center’s Social Performance area was invited to the program Reporte Minero y Energético, to talk about water use and the relationship between communities and the mining industry.

The mining specialist media reported on the training in water sustainability developed by SMI-ICE-Chile in the city of San Juan, in the context of the Josemaría gold, silver and copper project, which Lundin Mining has in its portfolio.

In collaboration with the National University of San Juan, Argentina, a team from the Center conducted a workshop on water management for sustainability in mining projects aimed at public officials, journalists and opinion leaders.

Francisca Rivero met with women from the coves of Chanavayita, Cáñamo and Caramucho, in the city of Iquique, to learn about their interests and identify their capabilities.

Together with nine colleagues, the SMI-ICE-Chile researcher published an article in the scientific journal Water on the influence of changes in land use on erosion on the land surface of the Nonguén basin, in the Bío Bío Region, Chile.
