In the context of her presentation at the Planning For Closure forum, this renowned researcher in applied geochemistry from the Sustainable Minerals Institute visited with us as part of her intense agenda with universities and mining industry representatives.

The founder of Mine Waste Transformation Through Characterisation presented cutting-edge research on mine waste transformation to faculty and students Advanced Mining Technology Centre at Universidad de Chile at the Centre for Research in Technologies for Society (C+) of the School of Engineering at Universidad del Desarrollo and also at Universidad Federico Santa María.

Anita Parbhakar-Fox’s research focuses on the characterization of mine waste to improve mine waste planning and management, and the search for remediation options for abandoned and/or historic mine sites.

The researcher from the Sustainable Minerals Instituteat The University of Queensland, leads a series of government and industry projects in Australia to characterize mine waste in that country and assess their economic potential with a focus on recovering critical metals.

Global interest in mine waste reuse has increased significantly in recent years as the industry seeks to reduce its environmental footprint and legacy and meet the growing demand for critical metals by using mine waste as a potential complementary secondary resource.

The research group Mining Waste Transformation through Characterisation (MIWATCH), led by Anita Parbhakar-Fox, is applying geo-metallurgical tools to enable geo-environmental characterisation of mine waste throughout its life cycle, a methodology that seeks to determine the properties of mine waste and assess how best to manage it to reduce environmental risks.

On Friday, May 10, at 11:50 a.m., at the Planning For Closure forum organized by GECAMIN, Anita Parbhakar-Fox will be presenting her paper: «Mine Waste Transformation through Characterisation: Unlocking Circular Economy Opportunities for The Mining Industry.«
