This project will investigate the environmental effects of these spills on various ecosystems.
It will analyse the effects of spills on surface water, soil, sediment and surrounding vegetation using scientific methods and specialized sampling techniques. It will include measurements of the physicochemical parameters of water, geochemical and mineralogical analysis of soil and sediment samples, and vegetation health assessments to determine the extent and magnitude of the environmental impact, as well as the nature and source of the contamination.
The final objective is to generate accurate, detailed information on the adverse effects of mineral concentrate spills, which will allow corrective and preventive measures to be taken to mitigate their impact on the environment and protect the health of ecosystems and people. In addition, a methodology will be developed to identify sources of contamination at sites impacted by mining waste.
